Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Vancouver, WA

ENVECO recently completed a NTCRA for the National Park Service (NPS). Over 1,000 tons of RCRA hazardous waste and lead contaminated soil were excavated and disposed offsite. All work was completed with strict oversight by cultural and archeological experts because the work areas were situated within the limits of historic Fort Vancouver. The Fort was a frontier trading post and military installation with a strong Native American presence. The Fort is rich in buried artifacts, contains burial grounds, and is sacred to Native Americans. Buildings within the work area are former barracks, more than 200 years old, and designated historic. After removing soil to the specified depth, a demarcation layer was installed, backfill was placed, disturbed areas were stabilized with hydroseed and mulch, and historically significant features were restored (including sidewalks, plants and shrubs, and structures). NTCRA activities were documented in the NTCRA Construction Completion Report developed by ENVECO.

ENVECO is currently developing a Land Use Control Plan (LUCP) to address contamination that remains onsite. The LUCP includes comprehensive information to help minimize the potential for exposure to contamination, protect the integrity of the response action, and protocols for safe intrusive maintenance activities.
